When I was a sophomore in high school, I placed first my county's annual writing contest for the division I entered. There were a bunch of little prizes, like a Barnes & Noble giftcard and a pocket thesaurus, but since it was the bottom rung of a bigger set of contests, it wasn't much. The biggest "prize" to me was the fact that my writing was good enough to win such a contest.
